The math behind the required score

Your current grade accounts for all the work that's been graded so far. The final carries its own weight. To find the required score, solve this: (target grade - current graded score * graded weight) / remaining weight.

The demo above starts with two graded categories. Leave the final blank and set a target in the “Need for” field. The number that appears is the score you need on your final exam.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final at Spelman?

Enter every grading category except the final, set a target grade percentage (e.g. 90 for an A), and leave the final exam grade blank. The calculator solves for the score you need.

What if the required score is over 100?

That means it's mathematically out of reach with remaining work. At that point, your options are office hours, extra credit if offered, or adjusting your target grade.

What if the required score comes back negative?

Good news. A negative required score means you've already secured your target grade regardless of the final. You can't do worse than that.

Does this calculator work for all courses at Spelman?

Yes, as long as your course uses weighted grading categories. Enter the categories and weights from your syllabus and it works for any course.
